Peter Marshall, ILM, LLO, RYA power boat, Coastguard tutor awards Peter awoke to the magic of boating in his mid-40s when he traded an orchard for a 60' ketch-rigged motor sailer. He began a dolphin watch out of Tauranga and "learned a great deal of valuable lessons" chartering around the North Island and the Chathams. He is still learning. Along with his Masters degree in education, Peter holds Inshore Launch Master and Yachtmaster Offshore qualifications ("far more valuable!") and is both a Coastguard Boating Education Service accredited tutor and an Approved Radio Examiner for Radio Spectrum Management, Ministry of Economic Development

 | Dudley Jackson, LLO, CAT Dudley started sailing at the age of ten when his parents moved to the Isle of Wight, UK. The family home’s garden ended at the shoreline in the busy Solent waterways, famous for the Cowes annual regattas and also the birth place of the America's Cup in 1851. Local club sailing continued until his immigration with his family to New Zealand in 2002. As an IT professional tutor (networking), in 2007 Dudley found teaching sailing - his real passion - a natural transition. Dudley has owned a number of yachts, his favourite being a Steel Ganley Tara 39, which he sailed around the top of New Zealand’s South Island for 3 months with the family aboard. “There is nothing more rewarding than the enthusiasm of a student when you show them a subject you are both passionate about; it's electrifying!”

 | David Martin NZCE, MAIRAH, LLO. ex RNZNVR David’s interest in things maritime started with his entry into the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve in 1963 at ‘Pegasus”. Naval training through the Seaman and finally the Engineering division had him crewing the 72Ft MLs all over the country on patrol and search and rescue duties. David completed his professional engineering studies and soon purchased his first yacht – an Idlealong. As the family grew so did the many vessels! until the famous motor launch ‘Thetis” was purchased, reconditioned and lovingly puttered around the peninsular until sold in 2006 to a local family. His experience in lecturing and motivating others naturally led on to starting the Canterbury Maritime Training Centre in 1995 to assist others in learning to enjoy the sea as he has for so many years. |

Geoff Wright ran the Lyttelton Sailing School for 10 years before moving to the Schools Sailing School program that runs at Lake Rua near Christchurch Airport. Geoff has thousands of sea hours including a trip from New Zealand to the UK in 1994 during and experienced the storm known as the 'Queens birthday storm' in which many sailors & vessels were lost. Geoff has a wealth of practical cruising tips and experience to share with you. |

In January 1964 Mike ran away to sea and joined the Royal New Zealand Navy, serving for two years as Ordinary Seaman. Mikes big break in life came in 1965, when Mike traveled overseas. First stop was in South Africa, working on steam tugs out of Port Elizabeth for one year. From there Mike secured a berth on the Southern Cross, traveling to England, as an Efficient Deck Hand. Mike spent the next five years shipping out of Southampton on many different ships, from coasters to ocean liners. Some of the ships that Mike sailed on were Pendennis Castle, Pretoria Castle, Good Hope Castle, Richmond Castle, SA Oranje, MV Chuscal, MV Dragon, SS Golfito and MV Ardglen. Mike also tutors for Coastguard Boating Education and run many of their courses in Day Skipper, Boatmaster, VHF Radio operation, GPS, Boat Handling. Mike also teaches how to Splice Rope or Wire and tie Knots. Quals: Seamanship Instructors Level 3 Yachting New Zealand, YNZ Certs. |
